In Detroit, Michigan in the 80s, auto factories were closing, workers were losing their homes to the banks, families were breaking apart so that one or more of the wage earners could leave town to find work. The government at the time was very interested in decreasing the trade deficit by encouraging business to invest abroad. It did not seem that many businesses were interested in helping workers in this country or to put it in more colloquial terms - no one seemed to care about helping their neighbors next door. A group of concerned volunteers got together to raised money to pay rents, buy food, negotiate with creditors and give advice to those that seemed on their last leg of survival. At that time, no one thought of forming a non profit in any form. The only goal was to keep those in need in their homes and with food for their families.
